Brake Maintenance: Even New Cars Need Attention

When we purchase a new car, we often assume that it will have lower maintenance and repair costs for an extended period of time. However, there are instances where even newer cars require attention sooner than expected. So, let’s consider the case of a 2015 Mazda 6 with a mere 27,000 miles on it, which required new rear brake pads and brake rotors. The question is – why did this happen?

Brake Pads Aren’t Always the First to Go

It seems that the rear brake rotors in the car have become rusted due to the vehicle being parked for long periods. It is believed that the car was left outside in Chicago, where it was exposed to harsh weather conditions like heavy rain and snow accumulation during its first year of use.

Normally, the surface of the brake rotors should be smooth and shiny due to regular contact with the brake pads. However, it is evident that half of the brake rotor’s surface area is rusted, indicating that the brake pads were not making proper contact at those points. As a result, the rear brakes are functioning at only half of their capacity.

This reduction in the vehicle’s braking power puts a lot of strain on the front brakes, leading to a significant decrease in the overall braking power. Therefore, it is essential to have the brake rotors and pads regularly checked and maintained to avoid such issues, which can result in dangerous driving situations.

Regular Check-ups Saved the Front Brakes

It’s important to inspect your vehicle at least twice a year to ensure proper maintenance. Six months before the incident, the car’s owner brought it in for an oil change, and we found that the brakes were in good condition at that time. If the brakes had been left unattended for an extended period, the owner would have had to replace the front brakes, too, which would have increased the cost of repairs.

Fortunately, the owner brought the car in for an oil change before a long road trip. We discovered that the brakes were worn out during the inspection and needed immediate replacement. We replaced the brakes and rotors within two hours, ensuring a safe and smooth journey for the family. Our quick action to replace the brakes also helped extend the life of the front brake pads and prevented further damage to the vehicle.
