Advantages of DIP and disadvantages of SMD

1, For DIP, each pixel is made of three independent color (RGB) LED bulbs . Each bulb is two feet long . The long leg is inserted into the pad, so after soldering the hole through the hole that will be a rare cold soldering problem. SMD LED displays have short legs and the led lights are mounted on pads that are easier to cause cold soldering problems than Dips.

2, long legs allow led bulbs to perform better on heat dissipation. Better heat dissipation means a long life time for the led display. So, DIP LED will be more durable than SMD in the long run.

3, the size of the DIP LED lamp is large, it allows the led screen to provide higher brightness. Usually the normal brightness of the DIP led display can reach 7,500nits while the high brightness can reach more than 10,000nits. Typically for outdoor SMD displays the brightness is around 6,000nit.

4, DIP led screen uses less power when compared to the same specification SMD. Mostly the power consumption of DIP LED is 1/3 less than SMD.

Advantages of SMD and disadvantages of DIP

1, because the size of the DIP led bulb is large and each pixel is made of 3 bulbs, so there is no space to allow the DIP led display to achieve a pixel pitch smaller than 10mm. Currently, DIP LED displays usually only have p10mm, p12mm, p16mm and p20mm pixels. But SMD LED’s are small and can be placed nearby. Closer placement results in higher resolution. SMD LED display pixel pitch can be made from 0.9-10mm.

2, The viewing angle of DIP LED display is smaller when compared to SMD. It only supports H120 ° and V60 ° while SMD LED’s display a wide viewing angle that can reach H160 ° and V160 °. So if you have the need for a sharp viewing angle, the SMD LED screen will be a good choice.

3, The production efficiency and manufacturing cost is higher for DIP, because there are 3 bulbs for each pixel, put one pixel on the DIP module will be at least 3 times slower than the work for SMD one. And they are many new SMT machines that can continue the SMD screen assembly process faster than DIP. This is one of the reasons that there are less and less manufacturers producing DIP LED displays now.

4, Usually the cost of DIP led displays is higher than SMD if based on the same specifications and pixel pitch.

In general they both have advantages and disadvantages. If for your outdoor fixed installation projects that require high brightness and more durable applications then you can choose DIP LED displays. If you need higher resolution and wider viewing angles then SMD would be a good choice. For indoor applications, the viewing distance is shorter and usually we are looking for the best picture quality and do not need very high brightness, so SMD led screens will always be the best choice.
